Professor of Biochemical Engineering

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in chemical or biochemical engineering or an equivalent discipline;
  • A doctoral degree (level 10NFQ) in chemical engineering or an equivalent discipline.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

Advance and consolidate an international centre of excellence in biochemical engineering research at the University of Limerick. Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education.

DESCRIPTION:

The post will be hosted in the Department of Chemical Sciences, one of three departments within the School of Natural Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Limerick. The SALI Professor of Biochemical Engineering will develop their research within the Bernal Institute and contribute to the teaching and research mission of the Department of Chemical Sciences The successful candidate will have internationally leading expertise in Bio/chemical Engineering.

While candidates from a range of areas in bio/chemical and process engineering are welcome candidates with expertise in fundamental areas that underpin research areas that will support the development of biopharmaceuticals are particularly welcome. Candidates will provide leadership and direction for biochemical engineering research in the Department and the Institute that is strongly connected with the development and innovative design of current and new products relevant to the Irish and international biopharmaceutical sectors.

The holder of the position will have a strong background in the relevant engineering fundamentals, and a demonstrated interest to develop and apply this competence to promote the development of technologies for grand challenges in health and in related UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The successful candidate, from an academic or industry background, will have a doctoral degree (Level 10 NFQ) in a relevant discipline, an international research reputation in the discipline as indicated by multiple successes in securing independent research funding, leading a group of researchers and a significant publication record in high impact international journals and/or patents. Candidates must demonstrate how their research and teaching complements existing strengths at the University of Limerick and the (bio)pharmaceutical sector in Ireland.

This position is offered in the context of the Bernal Institute, an investment of €150 million in infrastructure and academic staff in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The Institute is home to over 450 researchers housed in 20,000 m2 of high-quality research space.

A new facility, the 7,500 m2 Analog Devices Building, was opened in 2015 with a total of 20,000 m2 of high-quality research space now available to the Institute. A generous research package including start-up funds, laboratory space and equipment will be provided.

The Bernal Institute has an extensive array of state-of-the-art characterisation facilities that include three new test beds for continuous crystallisation, biological processing and molecular process analysis for sustainable chemical transformations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the delivery and organisation of teaching, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to develop a research programme which complements existing research themes within the Department and the Bernal Institute. The successful candidate will be expected to play an appropriate administrative within the Department. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to avail of and establish collaborations in the research clusters of the Bernal Institute, with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Technology Centre (PMTC, or with the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Cluster.

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree in chemical or biochemical engineering or equivalent discipline;
  • A doctoral degree (level 10NFQ) in chemical engineering or an equivalent discipline;
  • Significant research expertise in biochemical engineering;
  • Internationally recognised expertise in biochemical engineering;
  • A substantial publication track record in the areas of relevance to the position;
  • Evidence of successfully leading significant research programmes and/or winning significant research funding;
  • Evidence of a leadership position within an academic or industrial research environment;
  • Applicants must submit a statement of future research (up to 2 pages) and teaching (up to 2 pages) plans indicating how they will develop an international reputation in biochemical engineering and education at the University of Limerick.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Expertise in the area of bioprocessing (up-or downstream);
  • Evidence of invited keynote and plenary lectures;
  • Evidence of internationally recognised awards for research achievements;
  • Successful track record in mentoring PhD and postdoctoral researchers.
