The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics (CAEM) at the University of Arizona invites applications for two tenure-track/tenured faculty positions at the Assistant, Associate or Full professor level. The two areas of interest are Geohazards/Geoenvironmental and Building Sciences. These positions are part of the second year in a multi-year hiring process associated with planned growth in the Civil and Architectural Engineering programs, and are aligned with the Building a Changing World vision as a pillar within the University’s Strategic Plan. A description for each of the specific areas follow:

Geohazards/Geoenvironmental. Preference will be given to individuals with research expertise in the broad areas of geohazards and/or geoenvironmental engineering. Specific research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: modeling, assessment and mitigation of geohazards (e.g., landslide, subsidence, earth fissures, and seismic liquefaction), geotechnical aspects in mine engineering (open pit, underground, and tailings storage facilities), landfill geomechanics, assessment and remediation of contaminated sites, biogeotechnics, geoenergy systems, and data science and artificial intelligence in geotechnical engineering.

Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate an interest in developing collaborative research within CAEM and/or with other programs, such as Mining, Geological and Geophysical Engineering and/or the Geotechnical Center of Excellence. Successful candidates will also be committed to teaching a broad selection of undergraduate and graduate courses in geotechnical engineering. (Apply to https://talent.arizona.edu )

Building Sciences. The department is expanding our focus on engineering solutions towards increasing the sustainability and resiliency of the built environment. With this hire, we seek to hire a tenured/tenure-track faculty member with research interests in the areas of sustainable and resilient design and construction relevant to the built environment focused on buildings, building systems and their interactions with communities.

In particular, we seek individuals that complement or create synergies with existing efforts within the department. Preference will be given to individuals with research expertise broadly focused on building science/technology; innovations in building construction; or large-scale urban planning and design. Specific research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: design of energy efficient buildings, including low energy building envelopes and systems or optimization of energy usage in building application; improved building systems, including lighting systems or indoor air quality; grid-interactive buildings; data analytics and artificial intelligence as applied to system integration between the building and community level; and advanced building construction techniques, including robotics and computer vision. Successful candidates are expected to integrate their educational objectives within our nascent undergraduate Architectural Engineering program, are capable of teaching courses related to building mechanical or electrical systems or vertical construction, and provide synergies between Civil and Architectural Engineering and other departments, such as Architecture and Sustainable Built Environments. Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program; provide excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and education; contribute to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds; and contribute to scholarly activities performed within academic communities across the university. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute in meaningful ways to interdisciplinary research and educational activities that complement and are synergistic within the University’s Strategic Plan.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. degree in the specified, or closely related, discipline is required. Candidates will be evaluated based on their alignment within the posted areas of interest and on their academic credentials, their record of research, teaching and scholarly activities and potential for success in developing a funded research program and making contributions in research, teaching and service to the field.

Candidates for the Associate or Full Professor rank must have a distinguished record of published research, demonstrated impact on the profession and success at securing funding to support a research program. The selected candidate may be required to provide higher education credentials during the offer discussions.

To Apply:

Please submit a cover letter, a curriculum vita that includes a list of recent publications; a list of four references with address, email and phone contact information; and a detailed statement of research interests (3 page maximum) and teaching/educational philosophy (2 page maximum). The application should also include a one-page diversity, equity, and inclusion statement on how the applicant’s scholarship, teaching and service specifically address issues of race, social justice, and inclusive excellence in Civil Engineering.

For full consideration, candidates are encouraged to submit all application material electronically to the University of Arizona’s on-line application system at http://talent.arizona.edu (Position Posting Numbers above). Review of applications will begin on February 1, 2022, however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

For questions about the positions, please contact Dr. Dominic Boccelli, Professor and Department Head (dboccelli@arizona.edu).
