Assistant and Associate Professor positions in Cybersecurity

Job description

The challenge

We live in a digital society. People and organizations depend on the ubiquitous availability of data provided by connected digital devices and other computer systems. Therefore, they have to rely on the security, privacy and trust of data handled by these systems.

To get access to valuable data, these systems are continuously under threat of attacks, unintentionally initiated by normal users or intentionally by hackers, criminals but also companies and nation states. It is therefore of key importance that data is stored, transmitted and processed in a secure, trusted, resilient and privacy-aware way, and – accepting that we live in a world where attacks remain a major threat – are able to detect, respond to and recover from data attacks.

The SCS group

SCS works on the design and analysis of trustworthy and secure services that are realized by the complex cooperation of human and software agents. Due to the central role of data, our cybersecurity research strategy follows a data-centric approach.

This approach tackles the challenge of defending computer systems as a whole from two different angles: security for data and data for security. Security for data focusses on methods, techniques, and tools for secure data management during storage, transmission, and processing of data. Data for security focusses on methods, techniques, and tools analyzing behavioral and architectural data of services, systems, and communication in order to predict, identify, prevent and mitigate data cyberattacks.

Both research directions are based on the analysis of existing systems, software and services in their context but also on the design of novel systems. Our cybersecurity education activities include fundamental bachelor courses on cybersecurity –ranging from cryptography and data security to system security and AI for security–  and advanced cybersecurity master courses that are tightly coupled with our research, ranging from secure data management, software and system security, to secure cloud computing and privacy-enhancing technologies.

Embedding in TUCCR

The SCS cybersecurity research is one of the pillars of the Twente University Centre for Cybersecurity Research, TUCCR. The centre is a public-private partnership between the University Twente, public-private knowledge organizations and industry. TUCCR brings together cybersecurity researchers from various research groups of the University of Twente with researchers and innovation managers from the participating organizations and industries in order to deliver cybersecurity solutions to industry and society at large.
