Associate or full professor in Imaging and Artificial Intelligence

Key responsibilities

The Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) studies and teaches microbial, plant and animal sciences with a broad research scope from molecular and cellular levels to organismal and population levels.

The IBL has a collaborative atmosphere that is fostered by strong expertise focused around four Research Themes: Bioactive Molecules, Host-Microbe Interactions, Development & Disease, and Evolution & Biodiversity.

The overall leading principle of our research is harnessing biodiversity for health. The IBL is a growing institute and wishes to recruit a new group leader in super resolution imaging, who is, or will become, a future leader in his or her research field.

Microscopic imaging is at the core of IBL research in microbial, plant and animal sciences. The IBL and Science Faculty have state of the art facilities for high-content and high-throughput imaging and are home to NeCEN (Netherlands Center for Electron Nanoscopy), a world leading facility for cryo-electron microscopy.

With the new group leader position, we wish to strengthen and expand our expertise in super resolution and correlative light and electron microscopy, and in image analysis using artificial intelligence. We are open to applications in the broad area of cell biology, including but not limited to host-microbe interactions.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong independent research line that is attractive for BSc, MSc and PhD students, and that can successfully compete for funding at the national (NWO, TTW, Top Sector) and international (ERC, EU) level. The research line should connect well with IBL’s Research Themes and be complementary to and thus strengthen the existing research at the IBL. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the BSc and MSc teaching programs of the IBL.

Selection Criteria

  • A PhD in biological science or related field and at least several years of postdoctoral research experience;
  • Strong expertise in Molecular Cell Biology and Microscopic Imaging, in particular using super resolution microscopy
  • Strong affinity for the application of Artificial Intelligence for Image Analysis
  • A strong academic track record evidenced by publications of high standard and a network of collaborations
  • Successful in raising research funds;
  • Ability to foster an inspiring working environment for a research team, in which PhDs and postdocs feel supported and have the ability to thrive;
  • Experience in and affinity with teaching undergraduates;
  • Energetic ‘out-of-the-box’ thinker with a clear view on a challenging research and education program;
  • Excellent command of the English language;
  • A good command of the Dutch language, or prepared to learn the Dutch language.

Research at our faculty

The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are committed to expand fundamental knowledge by curiosity and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline; their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2300 staff and almost 5000 students. For more information, see and

The Institute for Biology

The research within the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) aims to work on the science base of biodiversity and health, which is reflected in our leading principle Harnessing Biodiversity for Health. We perform innovative curiosity-driven research to answer fundamental questions, and solutions-driven research to help solving major societal challenges.

The latter include protecting nature’s biodiversity, creating sustainable biotechnology and agriculture and increasing good health. Our research focuses on four Research Themes: Bioactive Molecules, Host-Microbe Interactions, Development & Disease and Evolution & Biodiversity. Located in a thriving scientific environment with our Faculty of Sciences, Naturalis Biodiversity Centre, the Leiden University Medical Centre and the Leiden Bioscience Park, IBL offers an exciting, internationally oriented and inclusive place to work and study.
