Associate Professor/Professor in Didactics of the Mathematical Sciences

Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) invites applications to a position as Assistant professor, Associate Professor or Professor in Didactics of the Mathematical Sciences at the Faculty of Education and Welfare studies,.

The recruitment is carried out following ÅAU’s tenure track system (https://www.abo.fi/en/tenure-track-at-aau/). A fixed-termed tenure track position as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor includes the opportunity to obtain a tenured position and advancement to full professorship after successful evaluation. An appointment to full Professor is permanent.

The subject field didactics of the mathematical sciences (didactics of mathematics, physics and chemistry) includes leading and developing education and research within the subject group for mathematical sciences at the Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies. The staff within the subject didactics of the field of mathematics and science comprises, in addition to the vacancy, a university lecturer, five university teachers, and other researchers affiliated with the subject.

WORK TASKS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • The mathematical sciences have a prominent position in the Finnish education system. The vacant position is responsible for the didactics of the mathematical sciences in teacher training for all educational levels of the education system. The subject field includes in particular the didactics of mathematics but also physics and chemistry.
  • The appointee will lead the planning and implementation of teaching and research within the field of the didactics of the mathematical sciences at the Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies. The appointee is expected to initiate research and development that benefits the mathematical sciences at all educational levels in Finland. Particular emphasis is placed on research that aims at a broader view of mathematical sciences as teaching sciences, development of teaching methods and a new view of learning.
  • The appointed professor’s tasks include conducting and leading scientific research, providing research-based education, following developments in science, raising funding for research, participating in societal interaction and in national and international co-operation within his or her field of responsibility in accordance with the Universities Act (558/2009). In the Åbo Akademi University Regulations on Personnel is generally stated the duties and tasks of assistant professors, associate professors, and professors.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

For the position in question, it has been decided that foreign applicants and non-native Finnish citizens can be exempted from the requirement for Finnish. Teaching on the subject is given in Swedish but also English. For a successful management of the assignment as a professor in the didactics of mathematical subjects, knowledge of Swedish and English is required.

The teaching and examination language of Åbo Akademi University is Swedish. For employment to a teaching position, native Finnish citizens are required to have excellent proficiency in Swedish and sufficient proficiency in Finnish. The language requirements at Åbo Akademi University are defined in Section 78 of the University Act (558/2009) and in the Åbo Akademi University internal language instructions (accepted by the University Board 25 February 2010). Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens are exempt from the requirement to have knowledge of Finnish. Teaching within the subject is given in Swedish but also in English. In order to successfully manage the duties as Professor in Didactics of the Mathematical Sciences, proficiency in Swedish and English is required.

SALARY AND WORK TIME

The Assistant Professor’s salary is set on demand levels 5-6, the Associate Professor's salary is set on demand levels 6-7 and the Professor's on demand levels 8-11 for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities, https://www.sivista.fi/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Salary-Scales-010820-and-010621.pdf. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid.

Teachers and researchers have a total working time of 1,612 hours per year.
