Assistant Professor of Statistics

A full-time lecturer in statistics is available for application in the mathematics program at the Faculty of Science at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland. It is possible to hire two individuals for 50% of the job.

The provisions of Act no. 85/2008 on public universities and rules on the University of Iceland no. 569/2009. According to Article 38 of the Rules, the Rector may grant advancement to the position of Associate Professor or Professor in the case of a new appointment if the person in question fulfills those conditions.

Area of ​​work

The lecturer will conduct independent research and teach courses within the mathematics program, both in undergraduate and graduate studies, and supervise graduate students in research studies. Possible research collaboration with other employees of the program is an advantage.

Applicants for statistics are sought. It is desirable that the applicant conducts research in theoretical statistics. The person in question will in particular be responsible for teaching introductory courses in statistics and courses in theoretical statistics at the advanced level.

Undergraduate teaching is generally in Icelandic, but the University of Iceland assists foreign staff in learning and mastering the Icelandic language.

Qualification requirements

  • A doctoral degree in statistics or related subjects is required.
  • Teaching experience at university level is desirable.
  • Research activity in statistics at the international level.
  • Good co-operation skills and agility in human relations.
  • Good command of English in spoken and written language.

Application process

When hiring, it will be assumed that the person who gets the job fits in as well as possible with the circumstances and needs of the study program in mathematics and the Faculty of Science.

  • Report on scientific work and other work they have done
  • Report on research and teaching plans if hired

The application must state which of his or her publications, up to eight in number, the applicant considers to be the most important with regard to the work in question. Applicants only send these publications with an application or refer to where they are available in electronic form.

When more than one author submits a work, applicants must state their contribution to the work. Application documents that cannot be submitted electronically must be submitted in duplicate to the School of Science and Innovation at the University of Iceland, Sæmundargata 2, 101 Reykjavík.

The appointment will be for a term of five years in the first instance, with the possibility of indefinite employment after that time, cf. Paragraph 3 Article 31 rules for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009.
