About the position

The Department of Computer Science (IDI), group for Data and Artificial Intelligence (DART), has a vacancy for the position of associate professor in Database Systems, with focus on large-scale query processing.

Query processing has been an important research area for several decades. The advent of Big Data (very large data volumes, frequently arriving in a streaming manner, and a variety of data types) has created new challenges that can only be solved by efficient use of computing resources, typically achieved by novel algorithms, indexing techniques, and often in combination with appropriate parallelization of queries. Our group has a strong history in large-scale query processing, dating back to the 70s, and we now want to strengthen our team with one more associate professor.

Applicants must have a formal background in computer science, with research focus on large-scale query processing in databases. Candidates are expected to have performed research on an international top level. Competence in parallel query processing and/or in-memory databases will be considered a plus.

The position reports to head of department.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Contribute towards excellent research and research-based education in databases in cooperation with the existing staff
  • Initiate and take part in national and international research projects
  • Participate in the operation of the group's activities. This includes tasks related to teaching and supervision, as well as business contacts
  • Contribute to an excellent learning environment in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders. The associate professor is expected to teach courses at all levels and should supervise MSc and PhD students

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have a doctorate in computer science, with a specialization in databases. Applicants should have a solid list of peer reviewed publications from the top venues in the area of database research (SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, etc.). The greatest emphasis is placed on scientific work over the last five years. Documented research funding from relevant sources and experience from leading research projects will be added weight. Further emphasis will be placed on educational skills and education. This assessment will be based on documented pedagogical competence, including educational education / experience, form of presentation in scientific work, experience from supervision and teaching, as well as educational background of another kind. In the assessment, both quality and breadth will be considered.

Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development of the field of area. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international conferences and journals within the subject area. Particular focus is placed on academic work during the past five years, exclusive statutory leave (depending on the disciplinary tradition).

Other requirements:

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

Those who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programme within two years of appointment.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor code 1011 is normally from NOK 515 200- 722 400 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.

When the application deadline has passed, a shortlisting committee will evaluate all applications. The best qualified applicants will then be considered by an external appointments panel and the most suitable applicants will be invited to interview and to deliver a lecture to undergraduate students.
