About the Role

You will be required to design and conduct computer modelling, field and laboratory-based experiments, and to assist University supervisors and the Defence Science and Technology Group to provide postgraduate supervision to develop a material hyperspectral spectral library/database for input into soldier signature modelling and simulation capability.

You will expand their extant knowledge of modelling and virtual simulation to construct 3D high-fidelity camouflage materials (i.e. cam-net, military fabrics, etc.) and field element models (tree, foliage, grass, etc.). They will use the developed hyperspectral library to spectrally render the land signature model in a virtual environment for use in detectability assessments from ground based or UAV mounted EO/IR sensors, and conduct validation studies using field trials.

This position is financially supported by the Defence Science & Technology Group. The Research Fellow will be mainly based on Commonwealth premises at DST Group Fisherman’s Bend. Travel to the University’s Brunswick, City and Bundoora campuses will be required for specific tasks.

About You

You will be specialised in digital signal/image modelling and simulation. You will also demonstrate the understanding of materials physics and performance. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with Higher Degree by Research candidates, staff and industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a member of a research team and independently when required, to meet project outcomes and milestones will be imperative to your success in this role.


Mandatory: PhD or equivalent in relevant field (including Technology, Science or/and Engineering).
