Tenure track position in the field of space optics

We offer a tenure track position in the field of space optics in the department of Imaging Physics. The department carries out both fundamental and industrially relevant research in the field of optical imaging and sensing. Main topics are achieving super-resolution and extreme high sensitivity using tailored and diverse illumination and detection schemes, in combination with specially designed resonant structures.

The aim of the new position is to extend the research portfolio of the department to space optics and to stimulate and sustain a strong collaboration with the SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research, which will soon move to the proximity of Delft. The assistant professor will be able to define and develop her/his independent research line which can be directed to both Earth observation (relating to atmosphere and climate instrumentation) and to novel optical instrumentation concepts for astronomic applications.

The program of SRON, and its views on future science-technology combinations, is anticipated to be beneficial to the research in term of defining clear applications and is expected to lead to joint proposals. The TU Delft has cleanroom facilities which can be used to develop and test new optical structures. For joint research, the cleanroom facilities of SRON are also accessible.

Candidates with an excellent research record in optics who have a convincing vision on realizing a successful research programme in space optics are invited to apply. Applications by female candidates are in particular welcome.

The successful candidate will profit from the strong ecosystem in space research in the Delft area, with the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, SRON, the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), the European Space Agency (ESA) and space related industries such as Airbus. Furthermore, the presence of the Dutch Optics Centre (DOC), an initiative of Delft University of Technology and TNO, and of the Space Institute of Delft University of Technology, strongly enhance the possibilities for acquiring funding for research projects.

In addition to research, the position comprises an equal amount of education, including teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervising MSc and PhD students. Also a contribution to organizational tasks is expected. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and professional experience.

A Tenure Track, a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate or full Professor, offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. During the Tenure Track, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop into an internationally acknowledged and recognised academic. We offer a structured career and personal development programme designed to offer individual academics as much support as possible. More information about the Tenure Track and the personal development programme can be found here.

Faculty Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

Research in the department Imaging Physics is aimed at developing novel instrumentation and methodology to push existing boundaries in imaging science and sensing. Also, we advance the fundamental understanding of waves and particles, their interaction with molecules and materials, and the analysis of the signals generated during interaction. Our work has clear societal impact in the areas of life sciences, healthcare, and industry. We are eager to expand in areas of fundamental as well as applied imaging in the field of space optics.

The candidate is expected to:

  • Have a PhD in a relevant area
  • Have an excellent publication record in optics
  • Have a convincing vision on research in space optics
  • Foster and sustain a strong collaborating with scientists of SRON
  • Be able to initiate, obtain external funding, and direct research projects
  • Have the capability to deliver high-quality and inspiring teaching at the university level, including the supervision of bachelor and MSc students
  • Contribute to organizational tasks of the department such as outreach and valorization

Conditions of employement

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years.
