Job Description

At the Institute of Computer Technology of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology the position of a University Professor for the specialist field of "Autonomous Systems" with permanent full-time contractual employment is to be filled as of 01.01.2021. The position as professor for "Autonomous Systems" has been allocated in TU Wien's development plan to the focal areas of research on Information and Communication Technology.

This is a professorship regulated by § 98 of the 2002 Universities Act (UG) and, as a Foundation Professorship, it is supported in the first three years by the B&C Privatstiftung as well as the company TTTech.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, one of the eight faculties at TU Wien, is active in the current research areas: Photonics, Micro- and Nanoelectronics, Telecommunications, Systems and Control Engineering as well as Energy Technology and Energy Systems. The Institute of Computer Technology is active in the areas of Embedded Systems, Systems on Chip and Software Intensive Systems.

The future incumbent’s field of work should be Autonomous Systems, with a focus on one or more of the following:

  • Safety and reliability Engineering
  • Risk modelling, analysis and management
  • Artificial intelligence (in particular machine learning, big data analytics)
  • Decision making, decision support systems and mission planning
  • Self-organizing systems
  • Human-machine systems.

The chair is expected to complement already existing research areas at the faculty with respect to autonomous systems: mechatronics, sensors and actuators, optimization, systems theory and control, robot control, path planning, vision systems, sensor fusion and perception, and telecommunications. Furthermore, this chair is expected to build up an interdisciplinary research group, that will study and develop solutions for challenges of real autonomous systems both theoretically and through experimental research.

In addition to research, the duties of a university professor at TU Wien include teaching activities in the engineering fields of the Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology as well as collaboration in management of the institute and the faculty.

Your profile:

Completed doctoral or PhD studies corresponding to the deployment described from a domestic or equivalent foreign university or research institution

The qualification for lecturing (venia docendi) acquired at a domestic or equivalent foreign university or an academic qualification recognised as equivalent to qualification as a university lecturer

  • High scientific reputation, proven by publications in internationally prestigious scientific journals, patents, scientific lectures, editorial and expert work or/and organization of conferences etc.
  • Relevant joint research experience with national and international reputation as well as the ability to form networks, proven e.g. by extended relevant stays abroad or through cooperation with foreign universities and research institutions
  • Experience in the acquisition, execution and management of research projects
  • The ability and willingness to manage a research division or a research group
  • Pedagogic and didactic suitability for academic teaching
  • Experience in the supervision of scientific work of students, such as master theses as well as doctoral theses
  • In case there is no adequate knowledge of German, willingness to quickly learn German is presupposed for teaching in bachelor programmes and participation in management of the institute and the faculty as well as in university bodies
  • Ideally, the prospective position holder has social and gender competence or experience in the promotion of young researchers and the advancement of female students/colleagues/ employees.
  • Continuous on-site presence is expected

Classification in the A1 category of the collective bargaining agreement for employees of universities and a full-time minimum salary of EUR 73,438.4 gross annual is provided for. A higher salary depending on qualifications and experience is categorically a subject of appointment negotiations.
