PhD Research Fellow In Controller Performance Monitoring

About the position

A 100% position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Engineering and Science as a PhD Research Fellow in Mechatronics, affiliated to the Department of Engineering Sciences, for a period of three years, or four years with 25% required duties. The position is located, at the present, at Campus Grimstad. The starting date is negotiable with the Faculty.

Responsibilities

Control systems for large scale industrial plants can have hundreds or even thousands of control loops. Any fault or performance degradation in one part of the control system can adversely affect the product quality and over all economics of the industrial enterprise.

The size and complexity of the control system makes manual monitoring practically impossible. Therefore, effective and automated monitoring is needed to identify the faults and root causes of the poor controller performance.

The candidates will mainly perform research on data driven methods to identify poorly performing control loops. The focus will be to develop effective monitoring techniques, using adaptive data analysis, advanced signal processing and control system knowledge, to determine the types of faults and to isolate the root cause(s). In addition, machine learning techniques for fault detection and diagnosis may be explored. Candidates are also required to publish in top-ranking journals and conferences.

Required qualifications

The candidate is expected to hold a Master’s degree, with a minimum grade B, in Control Engineering or a similar/related field, preferably specializing in control design, system identification, state estimation, or fault detection; persons with knowledge within machine learning and time series analysis are particularly encouraged to apply. This year’s candidates/candidates who are in the closing stages of their master’s degree can also apply.

Good communication skills and a good command of English are required. Applicants from some countries must document their English proficiency through an English test (TOEFL, IELTS or CEFR). Please check this website to see if an English test is required.

A prerequisite for employment is that the candidate is to be admitted to UiA’s PhD programme in Engineering and Science, Specialisation in Engineering Sciences, Scientific Field in Mechatronics.

Further provisions relating to the positions as PhD Research Fellows can be found in the Regulations Concerning Terms and Conditions of Employment for the post of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow, Research Assistant and Resident.
