Associate Professor in Materials Science and Engineering

About the position

We are seeking a highly qualified candidate as professor or associate professor. The position will strengthen the research profile in materials characterization at the Department towards a cross-disciplinary research activity in the field of 3D Atom Probe Tomography (APT) characterization.

A new state-of-the-art 3D Atom Probe instrument provides unique research opportunities. The position is affiliated with the MiMaC national infrastructure including the Atom Probe Tomography laboratory ( The position is associated with the Physical Metallurgy group ( The position reports to the Head of the Department.

Research activities in the Department cover a wide range of topics including electrochemical energy technology, functional materials and materials chemistry, nanomaterials, ceramics, corrosion, physical metallurgy and metallurgical and electrochemical process engineering. Duties of the position

This position is focused on cross-disciplinary research activities in the field of 3D Atom Probe Tomography (APT) characterization utilizing the established state of the art APT laboratory and other relevant national infrastructures.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and be responsible for the following tasks:

  • The holder of this position will be responsible for the APT laboratory and relevant competence development and specifically teaching activities related to the use of APT.
  • The candidate will be responsible for taking part in teaching and development in courses in materials science and engineering and particularly material characterization techniques, as well as supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD candidates.
  • To show a strong program of externally funded research and scholarships.
  • It is desired that that the candidate will strengthen the existing research profile of the Department and contribute to strengthen the national and international collaboration in academia and industry.

Required selection criteria

For both the Professor and the Associate Professor:

  • The applicant must have well documented scientific competence, preferably with hands-on operation experience of advanced APT instruments.
  • The successful candidate will have a PhD in physical metallurgy/materials science or a related field and an excellent and relevant track record over the last five years of research.
  • The research field of the candidate should contribute to strengthening of the already ongoing research in the Department, preferably within the Physical Metallurgy group.
  • In depth knowledge of other advanced material characterization techniques will be considered as an advantage.

Emphasis will be placed on the scientific competence as well as experience with supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD students. Evaluation of the applicant will be based on documented material, including teaching experience at university level, pedagogical training, presentation of academic work, experience from supervision and teaching of BSc, MSc and PhD candidates, as well as other related skills. The evaluation will take into account the loss of research productivity for applicants who have had parental leave during the last years.

You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

This means that we pay special attention to the quality and professional breadth of these works. We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

For the full Professor:

The full professorship candidates must document a leadership in research that has led to an extensive and excellent research track record with publications in highly reputed journals. Candidates must document high-quality teaching and supervision experience. In addition, the candidate must show the ability to promote collaborative research and a strong documented funding generation ability.

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document

  • Development in teaching and counselling of students over time
  • Extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
  • Participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment
  • The position of Professor  requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-2.

For the Associate Professor:

The associate professorship candidates must document the ability to initiate and lead research and publish in recognized international journals. The applicants should document formal training and teaching and supervision experience.

The position of Associate Professor within (subject area) requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.

Salary and conditions

The position as Professor/Associate Professor (code 1013/1011) comes with a starting package for new research staff, opportunities for mentoring and is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
