The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Aarhus University, Denmark, invites three (3) excellent candidates to join the team for up to 3-year research positions. Applicants will join an exciting opportunity to work on two new research projects ("Future Green Construction Sites" and "Green Tracking and Monitoring of Construction Resources") funded by the Danish Research Councils and / or ("Digital Twins for Construction Safety") funded by the European Union.

Research area and project description

The topic for the positions is tracking construction resources (equipment and labor) and integration of real-time data in a Digital Building Twin (DBT). The purpose is to demonstrate construction site performance measurement and connect this, among other reasons, to the environmental (emissions) and safety impact of the construction resources.

The "Future Green Construction Sites" project is funded by the Danish Environmental Technology Development Program. This project targets a reduction of emissions from construction equipment operation. Several major industrial partners, incl. Heavy equipment manufacturers, are participating. Sensor equipment deployed on large construction machines is integrated into the DBT to measure and reduce emissions by simulating possible site improvements.

The "Green Tracking and Monitoring of Construction Resources" project is funded by the Danish Independent Research Council. This project targets reduction of embodied energy in construction. Tracking of construction workers is used to monitor and predict construction labor productivity and effectively shorten construction duration. The selected candidate will work on tracking and connecting these data to productivity in a DBT.

Two projects are funded by the European Union enable ("BIM2TWIN" and "COGITO"). The selected candidate (s) will work on DBT related to construction safety, health, and well-being. The projects target automated safety rule checking in Building Information Modeling (BIM), run-time autonomous data collection and analysis for hazard prediction and avoidance (from vision- or wireless sensors), and augmented / virtual personalized feedback and learning methods (AR / VR ).

Educational qualifications

  • We seek excellent candidates with backgrounds in Civil and Architectural Engineering, Computer and Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline such as Mechanical Engineering (having completed a Doctoral degree). A desire to engage in cross-disciplinary research at the intersection of engineering, computer science, and construction engineering and management will be important in order to improve tracking of resources for the construction phase. It will be relevant, but certainly not required, to have experience with:
  • Construction engineering and project management, incl. Lean and modern methods of construction Construction informatics, incl. Building Information Modeling (BIM) Integration of sensory information in simulation models during run-time Data processing, incl. Artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • Having experience in publishing scientific results as well as working with industry is considered an asset in these positions. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate good ability to code with or learn programming languages, such as C ++, C #, Python, Matlab. The successful candidate (s) will be involved in interdisciplinary collaborations with industrial partners and our international academic collaborators. Opportunities for participation in teaching and mentoring will be given.
  • You will join and work as part of a strong interdisciplinary research team and collaborate with experts from different institutes, universities, and industry organizations.

The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Aarhus University ( was established in 2021 to promote and develop engineering research and education at Aarhus University. The Department undertakes engineering research and education within architectural, construction, design, environmental, and structural engineering disciplines in close collaboration with other departments at the University (eg, mechanical, electrical, computer, civil, architectural, chemical and biological engineering).

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications - and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, - the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated.
