Job Description

We are looking for an ambitious and results-oriented researcher with a strong background in superconducting circuits. As a researcher at VTT, you will have a key role in the development of new hardware components for superconducting sensors and quantum computers, with a focus on scalability.

You identify and solve problems independently and creatively, while working closely and flexibly with a team of experts. You focus on the design and characterization aspects of the process, but ideally you understand the big picture and can provide input at all stages.

In this position, you have the opportunity to develop cutting-edge superconducting hardware in a booming environment. VTT is the likely supplier of the SQUID-based interface circuits for the superconducting X-ray camera X-IFU on board the Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics ATHENA, a mission by the European Space Agency (ESA).

VTT is also a member of leading European quantum technology research projects (OpenSuperQ, QMiCS) as well as national initiatives (eg Quantum Technology Finland). Recently, VTT announced that it will acquire Finland's first quantum computer, with 20.7 million euros granted by the Finnish government for the purpose.

With us, you will be responsible for

  • Designing new hardware components utilizing Josephson junctions. (eg SQUID-based devices or SFQ circuits).
  • And / or characterization of such components in our cryogenic measurement labs.
  • Identifying and solving the key issues within your domain of expertise.
  • Communicating and solving those issues in tight collaboration with others at VTT.
  • Communicating and solving problems with external partners.

We expect you to have

We are looking for a person with experience in design and / or characterization of superconducting circuits, and a master's or PhD level degree in physics, electrical engineering, or other field connected closely to hardware. Your interests are primarily in technological hardware aspects of superconducting devices, although numerical modeling and practical programming skills are certainly necessary to support efficient design. You are proficient in English.

We are interested in both junior and senior professionals, but some practical working knowledge of at least one the following areas is needed: SQUID or SQUID-like magnetometers, amplifiers or other devices, single-flux-quantum (SFQ) digital logic circuits, Josephson voltage standards (JVS), or similar. Depending on your background and experience, it is possible to expand the responsibilities.

Ideally, your background includes the following

Master's degree or Ph.D. in experimental physics, electrical engineering, or a related field.

At least 2 years of experience in research on superconducting sensors, superconducting amplifiers, or superconducting classical logic (eg SQUID magnetometers, SQUID amplifiers, other SQUID-like devices, JVSs, or SFQ).

  • Device design experience.
  • Device characterization experience.
  • At least basic programming skills.

Any of the following are considered beneficial but expertise in all is not necessary

  • Cleanroom experience, especially to the extent that it helps in device design and debugging.
  • Numerical and analytical modeling
  • Cryogenics
  • Electronics
  • CAD design
