  • We are looking for One to Two Professors or Assistant / Associate Professors in Materials Science and Engineering. The professorships are positioned at the Faculty of Technology in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
  • The University of Turku is expanding its research and teaching in the field of technology. In the summer of 2019, the University of Turku was granted permission to start new Bachelor's and Master's programs in Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
  • In the spring of 2020, the first professors were hired for these fields. In 2021, the new Faculty of Technology was established, and with it the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
  • The Unit of Materials Engineering is a young and dynamic team with an extensive external project portfolio, which includes ERC grants. Now we are looking for 1-2 innovative Professors or Assistant / Associate Professors (tenure track) for Materials Engineering who want to join us in building a new strategic area of ​​expertise at the University of Turku.

  • The successful applicants may be appointed to a fixed-term associate / assistant professorship (tenure track) or a permanent full professorship depending on their previous academic merits.
  • For the position of Assistant Professor, we seek proactive researchers and teachers who are beyond their post doc phase, yet still at their early academic career, and who already have a proven track record of research and societal networking.
  • We value teaching merits, societal influence, the ability to acquire external research funding, proven business collaboration, industry or entrepreneurial experience, and multidisciplinary collaboration. For the position of Associate Professor, and particularly for the position of Full Professor, we seek experienced and internationally renowned experts who already have an excellent publication record and success in acquiring external research funding.

The teaching in Materials Engineering focuses on three main areas: energy materials, health technologies, and modern industrial materials. Current research directions include solar energy engineering, stationary energy storage, light-emitting materials and devices, and artificial intelligence in materials research.

In this call, we are looking for applicants who can strengthen our teaching and research related to the broad spectrum of modern industrial materials (eg preparation of materials, functional materials, recycling) and health technologies. We value applicants who are motivated to collaborate with researchers within the materials engineering and in other fields of technology and natural sciences, such as in mechanical, bio and information technology.

The salary for this particular post is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel (YPJ) when negotiating the employment contract. The position is subject to a six-month trial period.
