Associate Professor in Materials Science and Engineering Ferro / Piezoelectric Materials

About the position

We are seeking candidates with large potential for leadership in research and education, and strong commitment to high quality research, within ferro- / piezoelectrics, including new material systems.

The available position is affiliated with the Functional Materials and Materials Chemistry research group (FACET), Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Faculty of Natural Sciences, NTNU Norwegian University for Science and Technology. The position reports to Head of the Department.

Research activities in the Department cover functional materials and materials chemistry, nanomaterials, ceramics, electrochemical energy technology, corrosion, physical metallurgy and metallurgical and electrochemical process engineering.

Duties of the position

This position is focused on the development of ferro- and piezoelectrics, including new material systems; of interest are materials which will enable novel applications or improve existing ones, increase sustainability and add processing advantages relative to the classical oxide ferro- / piezoelectrics. The position advances the fundamental understanding of the structure - properties relationship and its engineering in these materials.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • develop a strong program of externally funded research and scholarships.
  • strengthen the existing research profile of the department and expand the international collaboration / network.
  • take part in teaching and the development of courses in functional materials, general and inorganic chemistry, materials science and engineering (including nanomaterials).
  • educate and supervise students on the BSc, MSc and PhD level.

Required selection criteria

The position of Associate Professor within ferro- / piezoelectrics requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.

  • your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within the field of materials science and engineering (or equivalent)
  • your academic work must be essentially within ferro- / piezoelectric materials including synthesis (ceramics, thin), characterization of electrical films and electromechanical properties, and fundamental studies of structure - properties relationships.
  • equivalent areas are sustainable ferro- / piezoelectric materials (eg, lead-free) and conceptually new materials systems.
  • you must document the ability to write research proposals, initiate and lead research and publish in recognized international journals.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university / higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages ​​at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU. Teaching in Norwegian is mandatory for undergraduate level courses at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

  • In a position as associate professor (code 1011) comes with a starting package for new research staff, opportunities for mentoring and is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.
  • Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of ​​work.

You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates.

Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
